My work expresses the sensory experiences to be found when I walk the coastline of my hometown on the west coast of Scotland. Colour, marks, tones, shapes, texture, movement, sounds and smells are available in abundance. This natural inspiration combines to inform and provide the stimulus which finds its way into the work.
In my practice I work in ways, including layering and scraping back, which strives to capture the energy and ongoing replacement and renewal of the coastal landscape. Through these and other processes I look to illustrate what it can sometimes feel like to experience the west coast of Scotland. My practice involves the use of a variety of different mediums including oil paint, oil pastel, acrylic paint, acrylic ink, charcoal and pencil. I also use a variety of surfaces which include wood panel, paper and canvas.
