I was lucky to grow up in a family that made things, as a child just what we did. Not thinking that they were more than simple skills. Choosing Ceramics rather than Fine Art or Textiles seemed to be a bit of a surprise to some but it was where I wanted to go.
Since graduating I have had chance to self employ myself as a potter and a China restorer.
The move into working with fabrics came when I inherited my Mothers work, her studio and her materials. As a very talented Tailor and pattern cutter, on retirement Mum took up many aspects of fabric work and I was lucky enough to bring her workroom home.
Hence my delightful delve into all things that a wealth of fabric, equipment and threads brings to a soul in need of an outlet for a long abandoned artistic leaning.
Surrounded on all sides by long distance views of Galloway it's not difficult to be swept away by layer on layer of distance over estuary and hill. Using fabric collage I set out to try and capture the changes in mood, light and atmosphere.
As I learn from recent work and acquire knowledge of a different discipline I'm realising that all the life acquired skills are coming to hand again and being folded and pieced into the now. There's still a way to go before the spirit of the piece transcends learning a technique. what a journey to be on.
BA(hons) degree Ceramics/3 dimensional Art and Design 1977

Began working in textiles on inheriting mothers work, materials and studio in 2018. Decided if I didn't want to give it all away I had to make use of my inheritance.
Built my own website www.garrocherteagarden.co.uk (always a work in progress)

Commission; Designed and made collage/appliqué wall hanging in three parts, 23ft by 2ft in total for the Quarrymen's Art Centre, Creetown 2022/23. Hung late Spring 2023
Exhibitions;
Tolbooth Gallery Kirkcudbright in May 2022 - Single Artist.
A collection of hand made boxes, hand sewn, embroidered and embellished.
Tolbooth Gallery Kirkcudbright August 2024 - Single Artist.
A collection of rough edged fabric, machine sewn collage pictures. With a collection of cushions and lampshades- more inquiring into techniques.
The pictures as views through imagined windows as reflections and echo's of the Galloway Estuary and Hills.
Aims; to build on the work completed.
Refining and incorporating techniques while letting the composition have it's own way rather than my skill set determining the outcome. Letting the hills and estuary, seasons and moods work through the cutting and piecing until what comes through at the finish is the essence of the place not just a picture.
