I am a visual artist based on the Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands, working across painting, collage, photography, books, and interventions. My practice explores the landscapes, architecture, and spaces I inhabit, drawing on my deep connection to the environment. Recent work focuses on the ‘constructed landscape’—how human intervention reshapes natural spaces.
Using an experimental, often improvised process, I work with found materials like cardboard, scrap wood, and paper, alongside watercolour, charcoal, and newsprint. My pieces evoke both real and imagined landscapes, influenced by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi, embracing imperfection and impermanence, as well as ‘Casualist’ art, celebrating the beauty of the unfinished.
Light and space are integral to my work. It extends beyond the canvas, offering a sense of movement—like navigating a landscape, reading a map, or pausing during a walk. Since relocating to the Highlands in 2015, my practice has become attuned to the rhythms of the land, reflecting seasonal shifts and the broader ecological crisis.
As a regenerative gardener, I explore connections between permaculture, site-specificity, and constructed landscapes. My work mirrors natural cycles, considering sustainability and closed-loop systems.
I draw inspiration from Land Art, Minimalism, and artists such as Robert Smithson, Gordon Matta-Clark, Paul Nash, Joan Eardley, and contemporary figures like David Lemm and Emily Speed.
Through my work, I invite viewers to reconsider landscapes—not just as physical spaces, but as constructs shaped by human hands.
