My subject matter is figurative, emotional ambiguity, sourced from observation, photographs, magazines, memory and textiles. My sketchbook is the depository for all of these ideas. The blurred cropped images, snippets of conversations, threads of fabric and fragments of memory combine to fashion a narrative that I attempt to convey in my artworks. The paint is often saturated, gestural and includes collage. By exploring the space between and around the figure and scale I am attempting to capture a fleeting moment of emotion, memory or dialogue without reference to a specific timeline or context.
Recent works have mostly been on paper, thin layers, adding graphite powder, charcoal, bleach and ink and allowing some works to develop over time whilst others are deliberate and immediate.
Jayne McIntyre is an artist based in Edinburgh, her artwork is figurative and depicts scenes where the viewer is invited to fashion the narrative. Working from source, her sketchbook is a combination of drawings, photographs, clippings, textiles, scribbles of text and ideas for palettes. The source imagery is frequently cropped or blurred. Jayne makes dry medium drawings and mono prints exploring scale and surfaces. The fabric of the clothing or patterning of the furnishings can become important in creating the artwork. Her art is a way of pulling together memories, a love of textiles and emotions. Jayne has had work exhibited in the Society of Scottish Artists Annual Exhibition, 2023 and was long listed in the Jackson’s Art Prize. Currently she exhibits with Paradigms, a group of four Edinburgh artists and their next exhibition is during the upcoming Edinburgh Fringe at Whitespace 76 Gallery.
