My paintings are often concerned with a sense of place, and a range of specific elements that I find special and inspiring . These elements consist of a variety of things, including the weather, the seasons, the tides and what it is like for me to live on the edge of the land, by the sea.
The physicality of the land and the transient quality of light and colour have always held for me a fascination and a certain mystery. The places in my paintings are not usually representations of real places , but very often people tell me they recognise something that is more to do with a feeling or a memory , and it is certainly the case that I am very inspired by places that have particular qualities . These places are usually very old, and whether it is a cave or the remnant of some ancient settlement or woodland, it is primarily the 'feeling' of being there that I am interested in
