  • Biography
Nicola paints with great attention to detail using layers of transparent watercolour to build up vibrant colours and textures. Always striving to be botanically accurate, Nicola seeks to go beyond the details encouraging the viewer to see the beauty, character and intrinsic value of a plant, often painting larger than life to explore what is hidden from immediate view.

Her work is an appreciation of the intricate and ingenious workings of nature. It is a recognition that our own lives are inextricably connected to the natural world around us and is grounded in a need to understand and cherish that world.
Nicola studied botanical art and illustration at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh graduating with distinction from the Diploma course there in 2012.

She has exhibited across the UK and her work has won awards from the Royal Horticultural Society, the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society and the Scottish Society of Botanical Artists. In 2019 she received the James and Eve Bennett Award for Excellence from the Florilegium at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Nicola’s work is held on permanent collection at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, in private collections and has been reproduced for use in books, advertising and interpretation materials.
