- Biography
I am a painter and printmaker from Armagh, Northern Ireland with a studio in Edinburgh. I enjoy exploring a wide range of media from large-scale oil paintings and mixed-media structures to watercolour and screen printing. I have worked as a tutor of Botanical Illustration at the Royal Botanic Gardens and as an Art and Design teacher in Edinburgh.
Landscapes and plant imagery are the subject matter my most recent acrylic paintings . Intrigued by the stages of the plant growth cycle and the seasons, I explore the dynamic interactions between flora and the built environment. Memories, atmosphere, the seasons and time inform the works which are resolved intuitively through the use of material fragments and relief support structures creating a dense textural surface.
My work hovers between figuration and abstraction. I draw upon a variety of sources for inspiration and imagery including plant specimens, landscape, reliquary, archaeological sites, abandoned homes. Seeking to have a more sustainable approach to painting this subject matter, I consider where possible the environmental impact of the materials I use .
