  • Biography
My practice is about nature, and our place within it. This mostly comes about through sculpture, which I love; transforming stone, making sculptures that people want to touch.
I use the direct carving method and because of this, the beginning stage of sculpting is visually chaotic with no apparent direction or structure to the work. The initial shape I seek often begins in my head and I’m not always exactly sure where it will end up which is exciting. To make the preliminary shape is often a matter of will but from then on the process of sculpting involves me in a dialogue with the stone and I feel a kind of transcendence from the here and now. The process of ‘making’ absorbs me intellectually as well as physically, and finding the form requires constant refining.

Drawing is extremely important, making marks, searching for ideas through the visual format. Much of this is drawing from life, which I find refocuses my eye and teaches me more about the 3d form, the space it inhabits and the area that surrounds it.

The act of drawing and sculpting focuses my mind away from unwanted thoughts; both absorbing experiences that keep me well, lessening depression and anxieties. This immersion in nature, paying attention to how the natural world behaves and where our place is within it, has become progressively more important to me in my practice. Close observation of nature on walks and my drawings helps me imbue my sculptures with their characters.
