Joshua Miles was born in South Africa in 1967. He studied fine arts at the University of Cape Town. His influences in printmaking started at a young age watching his aunt doing woodcuts. He is inspired by the impressionists style of loose mark making and the Japanese tradition of printmaking with selective rolling.
Joshua has a passion for capturing the play of light in the landscape found in reflexions on water or objects. This is often the softer light that brings out the inbetween tones that evoke emotion.
Joshua works in reduction block linocuts doing every detail from the initial sketch by hand and so only does limited editions of 10. He works only from images taken his self.
He and his Scottish wife enjoy road trips ‘hunting’ for the images he uses in his work. They live and work between their two home countries and now have a home and studio in both.
Joshua is one of those rare artists who has managed to make a living solely from his art. He is a prolific worker and as a result has exhibited extensively. His work can be found in private homes and collections internationally.
