  • Biography
My work pushes the boundaries between furniture and art, requiring unique construction methods and great technical skill. I am inspired by forms seen in nature — from the galactic scale to the subatomic. My work is often referred to as “technorganic design,” as it combines influences from contemporary technology and architectural innovation.

I’m fascinated by overcoming the technical problems. I start with the limitations of “table” or “cabinet” and then within those boundaries, see how far I can go with it. I like to push those boundaries. What is a piece of furniture; what is a piece of art? Can the two be combined?
Max McCance was raised and educated in Glasgow. In 1981 he moved to Italy, to study sculpture and design, eventually setting up a successful furniture-making business in Tuscany. He then travelled and worked in the USA, returning to Scotland in 1989 to establish his first workshop.

In 1995 he moved to Kinloch, in Fife, where he has built a display Gallery next to his workshop. His work can be viewed there year-round.

McCance is a leading exponent of “technorganic” design, combining forms seen in nature with modern construction techniques. His unique designs push the boundaries of classical furniture structure, combining traditional forms with contemporary sculptural elements.

His work is often seen in exhibitions across Scotland, and profiles of him and his work have recently appeared in Scottish Field, The Sunday Herald “Best of Scotland” Magazine, and Furniture and Cabinetmaking amongst many others.
